Bald Eagle Door

A Bald Eagle Entry Door for Dwight

From a reference photo to a 68″ × 84″ hand-carved mahogany entrance.
In 2022, a homeowner in North Carolina named Dwight came to us with a clear vision: a solid-wood entrance door featuring a landing bald eagle, carved by hand and sized exactly to his opening. What follows is the real process we followed—from the first photo to the finished door ready for shipment.

1. The Request
Dwight sent a powerful reference photograph of two bald eagles on a bare branch against a clear blue sky. One eagle is landing with wings fully spread; the other stands nearby. He also provided the precise opening dimensions and the desired swing direction. We do not begin carving until the design and every measurement are confirmed in writing.

2. The Drawing

We prepared a full shop drawing (REV-B) showing both the exterior and interior elevations.

  • Overall unit width: 68″
  • Door leaf: 36″ × 84″
  • Left-hand inswing
  • Matching sidelights with glass
  • Central oval panel containing the hand-carved landing eagle perched on a branch

The drawing was sent to Dwight for review. Only after his written approval did production begin.

3. The Making
Once the drawing was approved, the door moved through these stages:
  1. Selection of kiln-dried African mahogany
  2. Frame construction with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery
  3. High-relief hand carving of the eagle (wings, talons, head, and branch) on the center panel
  4. Pre-hanging of the door and sidelights
  5. Hand sanding and multi-coat finish
  6. Final photographs sent to Dwight for approval of the stain and carving details
  7. Professional crating for door-to-door shipment
At each critical stage—especially after carving and after finishing—we paused for client confirmation. Nothing left the workshop until Dwight was satisfied.

Why This Process Takes Time
  • Custom hand-carved doors are not ordered from a catalog.
  • A reference photo becomes a measured drawing.
  • The drawing becomes a carving.
  • The carving is finished only after the client has seen and approved the result. Each confirmation step protects both the homeowner and the craftsmen.
  • The extra time is intentional—so the door that arrives is the door that was imagined.
