The Vision & Design Challenge

When US client Michael Muller approached us to build a custom entrance for his private home theater room, he required a design that was visually striking, acoustically dampening, and dual-themed between the room interior and the exterior corridor.

The project demanded total customization across four key areas:

Dual-Tone Upholstery: Two completely different vinyl colors on the front and back sides.
Dual-Finish Electroplated Hardware: Mismatched hardware finishes tailored to match the decor on either side of the wall.
Dual Custom Wood Stains: Custom-painted door frame (jamb) and edge banding.
Cinematic Hardware Details: Custom circular porthole view windows (Window Reels), movie film reel handles, and protective kick plates.

1. Material Selection & Vinyl Swatch Confirmation

To achieve the luxurious button-tufted upholstery design, the client specified a classic Matte Black Vinyl for the exterior front side.

For the interior backside, the client requested a precise shade of Teal Blue / Dark Turquoise. Because blue tones vary significantly under different lighting conditions, our workshop sent physical swatch samples to the client in the US.

Selected Material: Premium Commercial Vinyl (Sample #530-62)
Composition: 70% PVC / 30% PU
Color Profile: Deep Teal Blue / Marine Blue with high abrasion resistance and flexibility for deep-tufted upholstery.

2. Dual-Finish Hardware Customization

A key highlight of the Michael Muller project is the dual-finish hardware scheme. Each door side features exposed metal components electroplated specifically to match its surrounding interior design:

Exterior Hardware Finish — Satin Nickel:
- Features brushed Satin Nickel electroplating on the exterior circular porthole window bezels, film-reel pull handles, and kick plates to complement the black vinyl background.
Interior Hardware Finish — Matte Brass:
- Features warm Matte Brass electroplating on the interior window bezels, film reel handles, and kick plates, creating a striking contrast against the #530-62 Teal Blue upholstery.
Hydraulic Heavy-Duty Hinges:
- Heavy-duty hinges concealed and finished to ensure smooth operation for high-mass acoustic doors.

3. Precision Wood Finishing & Frame Construction

To complement the upholstery and hardware, the solid wood framework and door jamb were treated with two distinct finishes:

Exterior Frame & Jamb: Finished in Matte Black paint to blend seamlessly with the black vinyl face and jamb frame.
Interior Frame & Edges: Finished in a custom Special Walnut wood stain, highlighting natural wood grain and providing a rich border around the teal blue leather face.
