What Jibson asked us to build
The brief was clear: a sound-control home theater entrance that looks like a finished piece of interior architecture, not a standard commercial door.
- The opening is a double door, 60″ x 82″.
- Both leaves open outward.
- The padded face is Storm Grey.
- People approaching from the hallway pull the doors with curved stainless steel ladder pulls.
- People leaving the theater push the doors with interior push plates.
- After the doors are opened, hydraulic hinges bring each leaf back and close the opening.
That combination is typical for a home cinema: the outside should look refined, the inside should be easy to exit in the dark, and the doors should not stay standing open.

Storm Grey upholstered home theater door
In this project the upholstery reference is a commercial vinyl with a fine grain, suitable for door panels that are touched every day. Storm Grey sits between charcoal and mid grey, so it works with dark theater interiors, walnut slat walls, black frames, and brushed stainless hardware.Why upholstered theater doors are specified:
- the padded face helps the entrance look like part of the cinema
- vinyl is easier to wipe than fabric
- the grey tone hides fingerprints better than white or beige
- the door can match theater wall panels or seating

Hydraulic hinges and automatic closing
Jibson specified hydraulic hinges so the doors self-close.
How this works on this door:
- A person pulls the exterior ladder pull or pushes the interior plate.
- The leaf swings open.
- The hydraulic hinge controls the motion.
- The door returns and closes instead of staying open.
This matters in a home theater because an open leaf leaks light and sound. A closer function keeps the room dark and reduces noise from the hallway.
What to confirm before production:
- two hydraulic hinge set per leaf, plus one heavy duty weight bearing hinge
- closing speed
- latching speed
- hold-open or no hold-open
- door weight after upholstery and hardware
- outswing clearance in the hallway
If local code or the hardware schedule requires a surface closer instead of, or in addition to, hydraulic hinges, that can be coordinated before machining.
